Austin Energy: Austin Texas Wins Climate Protection Award

The City of Austin is being recognized for its efforts to promote clean energy. At the United States Conference of Mayors conference in Boston, Mayor Steve Adler accepted a first-place award at the 2018 Mayors’ Climate Protection Awards in recognition of the cities renewable energy programs. Austin continues to be a global leader in sustainability.

Chron.com: Largest Solar Farm In Texas Getting Battery System

Officially ‘turned on’ in June, the Upton 2 Solar Farm is now the largest solar power plant in Texas. Owned by by Vistra Energy subsidiary Luminant, this new solar farm covers nearly 1,900 acres — roughly the equivalent of 1,424 football fields! 718,000 solar panels were used in this 212.5 MW-DC project.

The West Texas solar farm will also get a battery system that is capable of storing enough electricity to provide 10 megawatts an hour for more than four hours. The massive battery – housed in 40 shipping container-sized boxes on the site – is expected to be online by the end of 2018.

Solar Power World: Texas wedding venue goes green with 26.55-kW solar system

Brodie Homestead is bringing green-themed weddings to a whole new level. The Sunset Valley, Texas-based wedding venue and event space recently installed a solar project that covers the roof of its historic barn. Designed by Alba Energy, the new solar installation will cover the majority of Brodie Homestead’s energy needs and save the company more than $230,000 over the next 25 years.

Nasdaq: Sysco Announces Multi-Site Solar Garden Project in Texas

Food service distribution company Sysco announced in June is had signed a 10-year renewable energy deal with Houston-based NRG. As part of the agreement, three solar garden sites are being constructed in the Houston and Dallas areas, which will support approximately 10 percent of Sysco’s U.S. electricity usage. The environmental benefits of this program include reducing approximately 37,000 tons of CO2 emissions a year, which equates to taking more than 7,000 cars off the road. The solar garden sites total 25 megawatts of renewable energy generation and will support the majority of the Company’s electricity load in Texas, including the Corporate Headquarters.

The solar garden sites are expected to be operational by Q1 2019.
