PV Magazine: Denton, Texas approves 100 MW solar power contract

Denton, Texas was the second city in Texas to commit to sourcing 100% of its electricity from renewable energy, with a timeline of 2020. As part of this the city’s Public Utilities Board in May voted unanimously to approve a 15-year contract for the output of a 100 MW solar project to be build in West Texas. The Bluebell 2 solar plant is expected to be completed by November, following on the heels of the 30 MW Bluebell Solar 1 plant. The Sierra Club estimates that, along with a 150 MW wind plant, once the new solar projects are online Denton will be getting roughly 60% of its power from renewable energy!

A new report from the US Department of Energy shows energy generation from renewable sources like solar and wind is growing stronger every month. The latest Electric Power Monthly with data from March 2018 shows solar power generation up 33% in Q1 of 2018 over Q1 2017. Wind generation was up almost 13% in the same period. Meanwhile, coal use was down 8.2% to 28% of all generation.
