Please tell us a little bit about yourself.

We strongly believe in sustainability and preservation of our planet for future generations. We grow most of our fresh produce ourselves in our small back yard and dry our clothes in the sun. The sun provides free energy for growing plants and if we can make use of it for other uses such as air-conditioning homes, schools, and office buildings, street lights, cooking, drying clothes, powering cars and even commercial vehicles such as busses, trains, and trucks, we can save our planet. The technology for solar power already exists.

Why did you decide to switch to solar energy?

Four major factors that made us switch to solar energy were: (i) Our move to Texas from Ohio, (ii) AEP solar rebate on the initial investment, (iii) federal tax rebate, and (iv) availability of a solar energy company that is installing solar panels locally.

How much did you know about solar energy?

We knew about solar energy quite a bit. Our son conducted research on it and has published a paper showing that using existing technologies cities can produce a lot of solar energy for the use of their residents. But you do not have to know that much to decide whether to use solar energy or not. It just makes sense to make use of free solar energy that is available to you at your home.

Please tell us about driving an electric car…Did you plan to power it with ‘solar fuel’ from the beginning?

I drive a 100% electric car, Tesla Model S. It drives very smooth and it is quiet and safest car on the road. More importantly, it’s pick up is better than gasoline-fueled cars! I was looking for a more fuel efficient hybrid car, but our son pushed us a bit to buy the Tesla.

What made you choose Alba Energy for your solar installation?

We found two companies who were installing solar panels in the Rio Grande Valley area here in Texas and called both of them. Alba Energy was the only company that could install solar panels on a tile roof.

What was the process of going solar like?

It was very easy. The company rep came over and explained the different plans and rebates. we signed up and they started installing the panels within a week. It took them 3 months to get the system up and running.

What benefits have you seen from going solar?

Our home electricity bill has gone down to almost zero despite the fact that air-conditioning is on daily. I am looking forward to winter here in Edinburg, Texas when I will be accumulating credit from the electric company as I would not be using any air-conditioning. That way on an annual basis even my electric car will be fully covered by my own solar –generated electricity.

What would you say to someone who is interested in going solar?

You get the same electricity that you get from other sources. If you drive an electric car, you do not even have to go to the gas station and watch the price of gas change every day. Oh yes, you do not even have to smell the gasoline fumes. Electric cars are CHEAPER to run than the gasoline-fueled cars.
