The GTM Research and Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) report for Q1 2017 solar panel installations was released last week, showing another impressive increase in the amount of energy being generated by solar in America.

The U.S. installed 2,044 megawatts (MW) of solar PV in Q1 2017 to reach 44.7 gigawatts (GW) of total installed capacity, enough to power 8.7 million American homes! Growth in Q1 was driven by a fourth-straight quarter of more than 1 GW growth in the utility-scale sector, and the industry is projected to triple over the next five years, surpassing 100 GW nationwide, enough to power nearly 20 million homes!

Much of this growth can be attributed to the utility-scale solar segment, or the massive fields of solar panels being installed by power companies across America.

A total of 1.1 GW of utility PV projects came on-line in Q1 2017, accounting for 53% of PV capacity installed. A total of 4.7 GW of projects are in construction, and Q2 is expected to see over 2.0 GW of projects come on-line.

Total installed U.S. solar PV capacity is expected to nearly triple over the next five years. By 2022, over 17 GW of solar PV capacity will be installed annually!
