Texas Public Radio: San Antonio Outshines Other Texas Cities In Solar Energy Capacity

San Antonio currently leads the state of Texas in solar energy capacity, or the amount of power generation from solar sources. The city’s growth has been supported by a ‘solar friendly’ environment, including the CPS Energy Solar Rebate which was recently extended due to popular demand.


PV Magazine: Solar, Wind Begin To Help Meet Summer Peak In Texas

Solar power is expected to play a growing role in meeting Texas’ high summer peak energy demand. New reports by ERCOT, the state’s grid operator, estimate that Texas will add nearly 900 megawatts (MW) of utility-scale solar this year, as renewables continue to replace older fossil fuel plants throughout the state.


Solar Industry: Southern Power Commissions 102 MW Solar Project In Texas

In mid-May Southern Company subsidiary Southern Power announced they had officially ‘turned on’ a 102 MW solar power plant. The Lamesa Solar Facility, which is located in Dawson County, Texas spans 887 acres and uses approximately 410,000 photovoltaic solar panels. The output from this installation, which is one of the biggest solar farms in Texas, is sent to the nearby city of Garland who has agreed to purchase 100% of the energy for the next 15 years.


Dallas News: TXU, Luminant Owner Building One Of Texas’ Largest Solar Plants

In May it was also announced that Dallas-based Vistra Energy had bought the Upton-2 solar farm, a 180 MW project currently under construction that should be open next year. Located in Upton County, just south of the Midland-Odessa area, the acquisition of this solar power plant will help Vistra, which owns TXU Energy and Luminant, compete for large customers (businesses, cities and school districts) that have sustainability goals.
