The latest industry data about solar panel installations in America shows some pretty incredible growth. The industry expanded 97% from 2015 to 2016, with a new project installed every 84 seconds last year! The 42 gigawatts of solar currently installed in America is enough to power 8.3 million homes, and analysts expect this number to jump to 100 gigawatts / 22 million homes equivalent by 2021. There are over 460 solar installers in Texas according to data from the Solar Energy Industries Association.

The decision to power the city of Georgetown, TX solely with renewables was made in the name of saving money. “First and foremost it was a business decision,” said Georgetown Mayor Dale Ross. The city realized that there was enough wind and solar power available, that it was fairly predictable, and that prices wouldn’t fluctuate as much as oil and gas.

San Antonio Business Journal: Record-Breaking Year For Solar Includes Big Industry Gains In Texas

A total of 14.8 gigawatts of solar power was added across the US in 2016 with 672 megawatts of it coming from Texas. A large percentage of solar’s growth in Texas is attributed to San Antonio’s city-owned utility company CPS Energy, which completed construction for two large solar farms in 2016. In addition to the solar farms, CPS Energy used a rebate program to boost residential and commercial projects.

Texas Public Radio: Google Ranks San Antonio Fourth In Rooftop Solar Potential

Google’s Project Sunroof expanded into Texas in March and now offers their rooftop analysis to consumers in all 50 states. Project Sunroof has now surveyed over 60 million US buildings, and according to their data the top locations for solar in Texas are Houston, San Antonio, and Dallas.
