How Many Years Can You Expect To Save With Solar Panels?!
Being one of the top solar installers in Texas, we get all sorts of questions about solar power. One of the most common questions we receive is, “How long do solar panels really last?”
The truth is, solar panels are designed to last a long time – Longer than you might expect, in fact!
Here’s How Long You Can Expect Your Solar Panel Installation To Last
Solar Panel Design
Solar panels are made up of silicon solar cells enclosed in an aluminum frame and covered with a durable top layer of protective glass.
There are no moving parts that can break or wear out, and as a result a solar panel requires almost no maintenance.
Studies published by the US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL) have measured power generation by various types of solar technologies over a period of 40 years.

NREL’s studies have shown that long-term performance, durability, and effectiveness of panels has gotten better and better as the manufacturing process, quality control, and access to raw materials has improved over time.
Additionally, an article posted on Green Building Advisor shows how one man’s solar panel continues to work like new more than 30 years after it was manufactured.
The biggest caveat or warning with understanding how long a solar panel will last involves a calculation of degradation.
As time goes by, solar panels slowly lose efficiency or performance. This loss is often referred to as ‘degradation’ and is generally calculated as 0.5% to 0.8% decrease each year. Like all electronics, a solar panel’s performance will lessen over time, but even at 0.8% degradation, solar panels are still around 80-85% efficient after 25 years.
The exact amount of degradation varies by manufacturer. For example, LG advertises a 25 year linear performance warranty that guarantees at least 80.2% power output by the end of the 25th year.
And according to their warranty, the QCELLS solar module is manufactured to have a minimum power output of 83% of the minimum power output at the end of 25 years.
So the answer to our original question is that a solar panel will easily last for 25 years, producing 80-85% of its rated power, with even more years of useful life at a decreasing rate of efficiency over time.
