Awesome Display Of Wind, Solar Power Systems In Georgetown, TX
Have you ever been driving north on I-35 from Round Rock to Georgetown and noticed the random windmill near the highway that seems out of place? If you look closely, you can also see a roof of solar panels on the building. “What is that?” you might have wondered…
It turns out this is the CARTS Georgetown station, one of a large number of public transit stations available throughout Central Texas.
According to their website, CARTS provides a wide variety of community-based passenger transportation services in a 7200 square mile nine-county area surrounding Austin. The district includes the non-urbanized areas of Bastrop, Blanco, Burnet, Caldwell, Fayette, Hays, Lee, Travis and Williamson counties, and the San Marcos urbanized area.
At the CARTS stop in Georgetown, both the solar panels and wind turbine send power to a pair of electric vehicle charging stations in the parking lot. One of the main concerns of electric car drivers is ‘range anxiety’ or not having enough charge to get from point A to point B, so it’s nice to see that this location offers the option for electric car drivers to plug-in and recharge, and it’s a bonus that the power comes from renewable sources like solar and wind.

Georgetown’s Support Of Solar Power
Last year the city of Georgetown announced they were going to buy 100% of their power from renewable sources. Beginning this year, when a new wind power contract takes effect, the city will use 95% wind energy. A new solar power farm being built will prove the remaining portion of their electricity needs beginning in 2017.
